Game On Dude bids for compensation in the Breeders’ Cup Classic

bet-on-horse-racing-spreadsThe Breeders’ Cup Classic is one of the showpieces of the American racing season and, with a purse of $5,000,000, it’s also one of the richest races run anywhere in the world.

Early on Sunday morning GMT time, 12 runners will go to post in a bid to scoop the Grade One first prize of nearly £2 million.

Since the race was first run in 1984 only one filly or mare, Zenyatta in 2009, has won the contest. That record won’t improve this year as it’s an all male line-up.

No horse over five has ever won the Classic which is bad news for supporters of Pool Play, Richard’s Kid and Flat Out.

Four-year-olds have won 12 runnings, three-year-olds nine and five-year-olds seven.

Only eight favourites have won and this race has thrown up shocks with winners returning $133.60, $43.50, $31.30, $19.85 and $19.60 to a $1 stake over the years.

This is in part due to the extremely high-quality field that generally assembles. However, this year’s renewal looks well below-par.

The last eight winners had all previously won at Group/Grade One level which counts against the likes of Mucho Macho Man, Handsome Mike and Nonios.

Only four of the last ten victors had previously won over the ten furlong trip so that shouldn’t rule out Mucho Macho Man, To Honor And Serve, Handsome Mike and Brilliant Speed.
